A couple of months ago, we had informed our readers that filmmaker David Dhawan and his sons Varun and Rohit Dhawan were planning to set up their own production house. We also reported that the trio was thinking of reviving the superhit No. 1 series which David had started in the 90s. The latest we hear that instead of adding a new movie to the No. 1 series, David Dhawan is planning to remake Coolie No. 1 with his son Varun Dhawan in the lead role.
The original film, which hit the silver screen more than two decades ago in 1995, starred Govinda and Karisma Kapoor in lead roles, while Shakti Kapoor, Kadar Khan and Sadashiv Amrapurkar played strong supporting characters. The movie was a massive money spinner at the box-office and went on to become a cult film in the years to come. The Dhawans are planning to replicate the success of the original all over again.
David Dhawan has directed son Varun in two movies to date – Main Tera Hero (2014) and Judwaa 2 (2017). Both the films performed extremely well at the cash counters upon their release. According to sources, the Coolie No. 1 remake will mount the shooting floor in 2019 and, just like the original, will be high on comedy. Talking about the female lead, there were reports that newcomer Sara Ali Khan had been roped in for the role, but later an insider had declined reports saying that David Dhawan was still working on the script.
Meanwhile, Varun Dhawan is presently busy wrapping up Dharma Productions’ high-profile multi-starrer Kalank. Helmed by 2 States (2014) fame Abhishek Verman, the period drama also stars Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha. Junior Dhawan is also doing Remo D’souza’s next film wherein he teams up with Katrina Kaif for the first time. Besides, Varun will reteam with filmmaker Shashank Khaitan for a war period drama called Rannbhoomi.
