According to reports, Diljit Dosanjh and Taapsee Pannu’s sports biopic Soorma, which opened to decent response on 12th July 2018, is set to have a sequel. The film was based on the inspirational life of former India hockey captain Sandeep Singh. Singh, who has won a number of tournaments in his successful career, has an interesting idea to take the story forward. Talking to a popular tabloid, the sportsperson said that he is currently in talks with various production houses to bankroll the project.
“I have been getting a lot of messages from fans who enjoyed watching my life’s journey on screen, to take it forward with a sequel. Work has started on the project but right now, we are unsure if the original team will return for the second film, which will start where the first part ended. It will also feature flashbacks from my story that were shown in part one,” Singh revealed. He went on to add that his brother Bikramjeet Singh and some of his cousins are helping him in putting together the story for the sequel.
When Sandeep Singh was asked about whether Diljit Dosanjh, who headlined the original film, will return to reprise the title role in its sequel, he said, “It’s too early to say for now, but we will know soon.”
If made properly, sports biopics have always found audiences at the box-office. We have seen a number of sports biopics raking in a lot of money at the cash counters in the past, including Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), Mary Kom (2014), M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016) and Gold (2018), among others.
