90’s diva Urmila Matondkar set to turn producer

Most of us grew up watching her inexplicable gorgeousness on celluloid in the 90s and are still her fans. We are talking about Urmila Matondkar. The actress stopped appearing frequently in films almost a decade ago, but when she made a comeback of the sort with a special song in Abhinay Deo’s Blackmail (2018) earlier this year, our heart did miss a heartbeat or two. The latest we hear that the diva is set to be active in films once again, but not as an actress. Yes, according to reports, Urmila Matondkar, along with her husband Mohsin Akhtar, have turned producers. They are bankrolling an upcoming Marathi film titled Madhuri.

The film will be helmed by renowned filmmaker Swapna Waghmare Joshi, who has previously directed a number of successful Hindi shows and Marathi movies. Talking about the star cast of the film, it is being headlined by Sonali Kulkarni, Subodh Bhave, Sharad Kelkar and Sanhita Joshi. Spilling some beans on the film, a source close to the development reveals, “Urmila and Mohsin have been wanting to produce a movie for a while now and Madhuri seemed to be a perfect film for them. The film is presently in pre-production stage and is expected to roll soon.”

Urmila is not the only Bollywood actress to have ventured into the Marathi film industry recently. Her contemporary Madhuri Dixit also turned to production with the recently released film Bucket List which was presented by Dharma Productions’ head Karan Johar. Actors like John Abraham, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn have also invested in the Marathi film industry.

We wish Urmila Matondkar and Mohsin Akhtar all the very best for their maiden venture in Marathi cinema.
