After ‘Padmaavat’, Deepika Padukone set to play acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal

After a lot of speculations, it has almost been confirmed that talented actress Deepika Padukone has signed her next film. The award-winning performer was last seen in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial Padmaavat (2018), which went on to garner over Rs. 300 crores at the domestic box-office. DP is next teaming up with filmmaker Meghna Gulzar who has earlier helmed critically and commercially successful films such se Talvar (2015) and Raazi (2018).

The yet-to-be-titled film will be based on the eventful live of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Padukone will play the lead character in the flick. Apart from playing the female lead, the actress will also co-produce the movie. With this, she will be following the footsteps of Priyanka Chopra and Anushka Sharma who have also set up their own production houses and have been producing successful films.

Talking about Laxmi, she was 15 when a 32-year-old man, who was in an unrequited relationship with her, threw acid on her, which disfigured many parts of her upper body, especially her face. The gruesome incident changed the whole life of Laxmi. Now, she run an NGO called Chhanv Foundation, to help the survivors of acid attacks in India. Former US First Lady Michelle Obama had awarded her the 2014 International Women of Courage Award.

After Padmaavat, Deepika was supposed to do a film with ace filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj. But when the male lead of the film, Irrfan Khan, announced that he had a rare type of cancer, the news led the makers to put the project on hold until he recuperates properly and resumes work. The star is currently undergoing treatment in the US.

We wish Deepika Padukone all the very best for her new endeavor.
