It’s really a proud moment for the entire Assamese film industry as their movie Village Rockstars has been chosen as India’s official entry to Oscars 2019. With the selection, Village Rockstars has become the first Assamese movie to have been selected for the foreign category at the Academy Awards from India. Last year, talented actor Rajkummar Rao’s much-acclaimed film Newton (2017) was India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. However, the film failed to cut through the tough competition and was unable to be selected in the Best Foreign Film category.

Village Rockstars, helmed by Rima Das, had a long list of some highly successful films that, too, were eyeing to win the race to Oscars 2019. Some of them included such blockbusters as Padmaavat, Raazi and Shoojit Sircar’s October. However, the Rima Das directorial left every film behind and won the honour to represent India at Oscars 2019.

For the uninitiated who do not know much about the film or have not heard anything about it, Village Rockstars is a 2017 Indian Assamese language movie written and directed by Rima Das. It first hit the headlines after its grand premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), followed by the Best Feature Film ‘Swarna Kamal’ award at the 65th National Film Awards.

After winning the National Award, director Rima Das had said, “My sincere gratitude to @shekharkapur & National Awards Jury for awarding Village Rockstars with Best Film of India, Child Actor-Bhanita Das, Best Editor-Rima Das, On location Sound -Mallika Das! I am speechless. I have no words to express my joy. It’s a huge recognition for us!”

Village Rockstars revolves around a girl named Dhunu. Despite growing in absolute poverty and destitute, she learns to fend for herself. During such a difficult time, Dhunu does not give up on her dreams – dreams of forming a rock band and owning a guitar someday.

Village Rockstars is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on September 28, 2018.
