Filmmaker Karan Johar has pulled off one of the biggest casting coups you would have ever heard of. Yes, the movie maven has roped in Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Bhumi Pednekar, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor for his upcoming magnum opus ‘Takht’. Karan, who has never directed a period drama before, will helm the new venture under Dharma Productions.
Produced by Hiroo Johar and Apoorva Mehta, the movie is based on one important chapter of Mughal dynasty, where real brothers Aurangzeb and Dara Shikoh fought fire with fire to win the throne of their ailing father, Shah Jahan. Writer Sumit Roy has written the screenplay for the period drama, while dialogues have been penned by Hussain Haidry and Sumit Roy.
Announcing the much-ambitious project, Karan Johar shared the first poster of ‘Takht’ on his Twitter handle. “An incredible story embedded in history…An epic battle for the majestic Mughal throne…A story of a family, of ambition, of greed, of betrayal, of love & of succession…TAKHT is about WAR for LOVE….” read his tweet.
If reports are to be believed, Ranveer Singh will play crown prince Dara Shikoh in the movie, while Vicky Kaushal has been roped in to play Emperor Aurangzeb. Kaushal’s character will be a negative one. Kareena Kapoor Khan, who reteams with Karan Johar after 2001 blockbuster ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, will be seen in the role of their sister Jahanara Begum. From what we hear Alia Bhatt essays the character of Dara Shikoh’s love interest.
For Ranveer Singh, it will be his third historical film after ‘Bajirao Mastani’ (2015) and ‘Padmaavat’ (2018). Kareena Kapoor Khan’s first and last historical drama was ‘Ashoka’ (2001). Alia Bhatt, Bhumi Pednekar and Vicky Kaushal have never done any historical movie before, so it will be a new experience for them. It will be Janhvi Kapoor’s second Bollywood outing after ‘Dhadak’ (2018).
‘Takht’ is expected to release in 2020.
