Neeraj Pandey is one of the most prolific filmmakers of Indian cinema. From his debut film, ‘A Wednesday’ (2008) to ‘M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’ (2016), the director has always brought fresh concepts and engaging stories for the audience. However, his last film ‘Aiyaary’ (2018) failed to live up to the expectations of the audience, despite being a highly promoted affair. Unfazed by the poor response ‘Aiyaary’ garnered at the ticket window, Pandey has now announced his next directorial venture. To be produced by Anil D. Ambani led Reliance Entertainment and its partner Friday Filmworks’ company Plan C Studios in association with Azure Entertainment, Neeraj Pandey’s next will be adapted from the hit Thai movie ‘Bad Genius’ (2017).
Pandey is quite excited about his next venture. He says he is looking forward to adapting ‘Bad Genius’ as per Indian sensibilities. “We keep looking for exciting stories and content all the time and ‘Bad Genius’ is an amazing film. We are looking forward to the re-imagination of the film as per Indian sensibilities and hope our audiences like it,” he said in a statement.
Sunir Kheterpal, CEO of Azure Entertainment, echoes similar thoughts. “‘Bad Genius’ is one of the hottest remake properties globally. We thank GDH 559 for entrusting us with this title for the Indian remake. It is a moment of pride for us to be partnering with Neeraj Pandey and Reliance Entertainment on the Hindi adaptation for this title.”
‘Bad Genius’ tackles the very sticky topic of cheating in school, revolving around a quartet of students who devise a test-cheating scheme for profit. It also sheds light on class inequalities and academic pressures. As of now, Neeraj has just announced the film. He has not revealed anything about the cast. It will be interesting to see who he casts in his next. Since the original film revolves around four students, we assume its Bollywood adaptation will star four young actors.
