Last seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus ‘Padmaavat’ (2018), which emerged as one of the highest grossing movies of the year by pulling in over Rs. 300 crores at the domestic box-office, Indian cinema’s reigning queen Deepika Padukone has not started any new project. Though she was about to begin shooting for an untitled gangster drama film with ace director Vishal Bhardwaj, the project had to be put on the backburner as male lead Irrfan Khan, who previously worked with DP in Shoojit Sircar’s ‘Piku’ (2015), was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Now, the movie will mount the floor only when Irrfan is completely fine and ready to resume work.
In the meantime, reports are swirling around that Deepika Padukone has been approached to star in a remake of one of late veteran actress Sridevi’s blockbuster movies, which hit the marquee almost four decades ago. The makers are in the process of acquiring the rights. “The original Sridevi film was made by a producer from the South and helmed by a Bollywood director. However, talks are on to procure the rights and remake it with Deepika. Nobody is willing to comment on the subject because talks have just been mooted and there are a lot of modalities involved. However, it is true that Deepika is in the know,” a source reveals to an English daily.
Apart from this, Padukone is also rumoured to have signed a superwoman film which is expected to be made on the lines of Hollywood biggie, ‘Wonder Woman’ (2017). However, apart from her untitled film with filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, no project starring the ‘Bajirao Mastani’ (2015) actress has been officially confirmed.
