After ruling Bollywood for close to three decades now, superstar Akshay Kumar is set to make a foray into Marathi cinema. The National award-winning actor has decided to present and co-produce the upcoming Marathi movie, ‘Chumbak’. Produced under the banner of Miloni Multimedia, ‘Chumbak’ has been directed by Sandeep Modi. Renowned Bollywood lyricist and screenwriter Swanand Kirkire plays a pivotal role in the movie.
Kirkire, who co-wrote Akshay Kumar’s superhit film ‘Pad Man’ (2018), is quite excited about this association with the superstar. Speaking about the same, he says, “It was a coincidence that I co-wrote ‘Pad Man’ with R Balki. The producer of our Marathi film, Naren Kumar, was the executive producer on another Akshay starrer, ‘Jolly LLB 2’ (2016), and happened to show our film to him. Akshay loved it. As soon as I finished ‘Pad Man’, I started shooting for ‘Chumbak’ and had no idea we would be collaborating again so soon. It’s great that Akshay is lending his name to the film.”
Akshay Kumar is not the only mainstream Bollywood actor who has backed a Marathi film. Before him, superstar Ajay Devgn has also co-produced Satish Jadwade’s ‘Aapla Manus’ (2018), starring Nana Patekar, Iravati Harshe and Sumeet Raghavan in lead roles. Priyanka Chopra’s production house, Purple Pebble Pictures, is also very actively investing into Marathi cinema. The actress has produced ‘Ventilator’ (2016) and ‘Kay Re Rascalaa’ (2017) in the past, with ‘Ventilator’ walking away with the National Film Awards. Her upcoming Marathi ventures include ‘Firebrand’ and ‘Paani’.
Swanand Kirkire admits that Bollywood stars’ support gives a fillip to regional cinema. “The film gets validation. Marathi cinema is content based so Hindi film actors feel proud to associate with them,” he says.
