Speculations that filmmaker Shoojit Sircar is planning a film on martyr Udham Singh have been rife in media for months now. However, the latest development on the yet-to-be-announced project is that the director has approached National award-winning actor Irrfan Khan to play the titular role in the movie. Earlier, it was being reported that Ranbir Kapoor might come onboard to star in the lead role.
Sircar has been wanting to tell the great story of Udham Singh for a long time now, even before he started work on his recent release ‘October’ (2018). Singh contributed a lot to India’s freedom movement but a very few people know about him and his contribution. Shoojit is keen to tell his story on celluloid with Irrfan playing the martyr in the movie. The director is now waiting for Khan to recover before he begins the production at the end of the year.
Talking to a tabloid, Shoojit said, “I’ve been speaking to both Irrfan and his wife. He’s responding well to the treatment and trying to cope with the knowledge that he’s battling Neuroendocrine tumour by treating the recuperation in Europe like a short and unexpected holiday. I’m planning to visit him next month. We hope to roll by the year-end but will wait till Irrfan is ready to shoot. He’s one of our finest actors and a dear friend. To relive Udham’s journey, I need a performance with finesse and depth which Irrfan is capable of. Also, he’s the only international actor we have today and I discovered to my delight that independently he knows a lot about the history of Punjab. It’s easy working with an actor who’s interested and involved.”
Khan, who announced his rare disease through a statement issued a couple of months back, was last seen in the T-Series production, ‘Blackmail’ (2018).
