After the untimely demise of Sridevi, makers drop plans for a sequel to ‘Mr India’

In 2017, fans rejoiced when the news broke out that filmmaker Boney Kapoor and actor Anil Kapoor were planning a sequel to their cult film ‘Mr India’ (1987). Reportedly, veteran actress Sridevi was also kicked about the sci-fi project. However, things turn a tragic turn in 2018 when Sridevi breathed her last on 24th January 2018 in Dubai, leaving her fans shocked and teary-eyed all over the world. Imagining ‘Mr India 2’ without Sridevi is near to impossible. Not just the audience, Boney Kapoor and actor Anil Kapoor also feel the same. The latest we hear that the duo has decided to scrap the sequel once for all.

A source reveals to a popular daily that in absence of two pillars of the film – Amrish Puri and Sridevi – a sequel makes no sense. “It makes no sense to have a sequel without Sridevi. It’s like ‘Mother India’ (1957) without Nargis, or Agra without the Taj Mahal. ‘Mr India’ is so closely associated with three main actors Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri and Sridevi. And with two of them gone, it would be impossible to recreate the magic of the original. Boney and Anil have decided to call off the sequel plans.”

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, who helmed the iconic film in 1987, confirmed the news. “I don’t know what is happening with that project or what Boney’s plans are. I was never going to direct the sequel. Now with Sridevi no more, the question doesn’t arise,” he said.

Well, ‘Mr India 2’ was not the only project Sridevi was about to commence work on after the release of ‘Mom’ (2017); the actress was also looking forward to teaming up with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions for the multi-starrer ‘Kalank’. However, destiny had some other plans in store and the same role went to Madhuri Dixit after her untimely death.
