After staying away from Bollywood for almost two years, India’s international star, Priyanka Chopra, is finally returning to Hindi movies with Ali Abbas Zafar’s ‘Bharat’, starring megastar Salman Khan as the male lead. But before signing ‘Bharat’ on the dotted line, PC was rumoured to be headlining a biopic based on astronaut Kalpana Chawla. However, if latest reports are to be believed, the biopic has hit the roadblock and is not happening anytime soon. Reason? Reportedly, Kalpana’s husband, Jean-Pierre Harrison, has turned down to give away the rights to make a movie on her life.
A well-placed source reveals to a daily that besides Jean-Pierre Harrison, no one can give the permission to make the film on Kalpana Chawla’s life. The project was to be helmed by Priya Mishra. “After Kalpana’s demise, all rights associated with her estate are said to have been transferred to Harrison and no one else besides him can give the permission to make the film. Even though Priya may have got the go-ahead from Kalpana’s father, it seems that alone may not be enough to make the biopic. Priyanka’s team has tried to acquire the said rights from Harrison, but apparently, he hasn’t agreed to grant them yet.”
Director Priya Mishra has been, reportedly, working on the script for almost seven years now. She has met Chawla’s father, BL Chawla, many times in all these years. Chawla’s father had allegedly even signed the deal with her. But with Jean-Pierre Harrison denying giving away the rights, the makers are back to square one yet again.
