Meeting all the expectations, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, ‘Padmaavat’ (2018) has done a phenomenal business at the cash counter. The film, which hit the silver screen on 25th January 2018, has performed extremely well not only at the domestic box office, but internationally also. Resultantly, the worldwide collection of the period drama stands at a magnificent sum of Rs. 542.38 crore.
Made on a lavish budget of Rs. 180 crore, ‘Padmaavat’ has pulled in a humongous amount of Rs. 286.24 crore nett from the domestic market. Talking about the overseas box office income of the film, it has garnered approximately Rs. 176 crore from the international market, talking its cumulative collection to Rs. 542.38 crore.
‘Padmaavat’ is currently running in its sixth week, but despite the release of highly anticipated films such as ‘Pad Man’ and ‘Aiyaary’, it has been steadily earning at the box office. Looking at its pace, it can be said that it will cross the Rs. 550 crore mark very soon.
Starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in principal roles, ‘Padmaavat’ is based on an epic poem written in 1540 by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Before its theatrical release, the film faced a lot of opposition from some fringe groups who accused filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali of misinterpreting history in his film. In spite of all the hullabaloo, the audience welcomed the film with open arms and made it a commercially successful venture for all the stakeholders involved.
