Born in Coimbatore, Arunachalam had a simple dream of providing women across rural India, a low cost sanitary pad. After he found his wife to be using rags and newspapers during her menstrual cycle, he started designing experimental pads. It took 2 years for him to realize that commercial pads used cellulose fibers derived from pine bark wood pulp which helped the pads absorb without losing their shapes. But the imported machines which made these pads with the fibers cost around 35 million rupees. And he therefore developed a low cost machine which costs only 65,00 rupees. His machine, as of today is installed in 23 states and he is planning to take it to other nations too.
In 2014, Arunachalam was named amongst the 100 most Influential People in the world. In 2016, he was also awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India. The genius Amit Trivedi has scored the music for the movie and the movie is based on the novel ‘The legend of Lakshmi Prasad’ by Twinkle Khanna.
