Top 10 Most Successful Actor-Director Duos Of Bollywood

Bollywood has seen a number of classic and memorable collaborations of actors and directors. Since the very beginning of Indian cinema, a successful collaboration between an actor and director would pave way for more such collaborations in future. And in this process, the duo would deliver many commercially successful films. Want to know more about such successful collaborations? Here, we enlist for you the top ten most successful actor-director duos who have delivered several blockbuster films together.

Both have collaborated on a number of projects and delivered hits after hits for years before parting ways in 2009 after the release of their last film together ‘Do Knot Disturb’. Govinda and David Dhawan first teamed up for the film ‘Taaqatwar’ (1989). Also starring Sanjay Dutt in an important role, the film was a box office success. After the success of their first film together, Govinda and David went on to collaborate not on five or ten films but 17 films. Filled with all the necessary ingredients of a commercial potboiler, these movies were ‘Swarg’ (1990), ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ (1992), ‘Aankhen’ (1993), ‘Raja Babu’ (1994), ‘Coolie No. 1’ (1995), ‘Saajan Chale Sasural’ (1996), ‘Banarasi Babu’ (1997), ‘Deewana Mastana’ (1997), ‘Hero No. 1’ (1997), ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ (1998), ‘Haseena Maan Jaayegi’ (1999), ‘Kunwara’ (2000), ‘Jodi No.1’ (2001), ‘Ek Aur Ek Gyarah’ (2003), ‘Partner’ (2007) and ‘Do Knot Disturb’ (2009). Most of these films belonged to the genre of comedy and drew a large chunk of family audiences to theaters.

Of all the films the duo has worked together, ‘Aankhein’ and ‘Partner’ remain their most successful ventures. ‘Partner’, which also featured megastar Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles, raked in over Rs. 30 crores at the domestic box office in its opening week. It was the second highest domestic opening week gross for an Indian film at that time. Govinda and David last worked together on ‘Do Not Disturb’ which released in 2009 and was an average grosser at the ticket window. After a well documented working relationship with each other, both ended their association and never came back together ever since for the reasons best known to them. They were supposed to collaborate on their 18th film ‘Chashme Baddoor’ (2013).

But David signed Rishi Kapoor for the movie, while it was actually Govinda’s idea to remake the 1981 classic movie. We just wish these two creative geniuses sort out their difference soon and make another paisa vasool family entertainer.
