Movies That Grossed Over 100 Crores in 2016

    The Indian box-office witnessed some surprise hits and some shocking flops in the year 2016. Of all the films which entered theaters to try their luck, only a few could manage to hold well and earn some profit for all the parties involved. There were several factors which led even big-budget movies featuring known face tumble down at the ticket window, the most prominent of them being the demonetization move by the Indian government which kept the public away from theaters for more than half a month until the Aamir Khan starrer 'Dangal' arrived in cinemas and garnered moolah from all the corners. Here is the list of Indian movies that grossed over 100 crores in 2016!

    9SULTAN (RS. 584 CRORE)



    Produced under the banner of Yash Raj Films and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, the Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma starrer ‘Sultan’ stayed true to its name and performed like an undisputed King at the box-office. Since last couple of years, none of the Salman Khan film had to crawl to reach Rs. 100 crore club. Joining the coveted club has sort of become a cake walk for them. The same happed when ‘Sultan’ released on July 6. The film opened to unprecedented response and took  just three days to enter the Rs. 100 crore club, proudly becoming the tenth Salman Khan starrer in the much celebrated club.


    Salman Khan’s Eid release performed as per expectations. After the stupendous success of his last release ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ in 2015, the audience was expecting more from his superstar and Salman did not disappoint at all. From the day of its announcement to the day it hit screens, ‘Sultan’ remained in news and created a huge buzz among the fans. Everyone just wanted to see their superstar in the role of a wrestler, a character which Salman had never played before. And when the makers finally unveiled the first trailer of the movie, it garnered billions of hits on various social media and emerged as one of the most viewed trailers of 2016, making it more than clear that the film was on its way of becoming one of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema.

    The film, which revolved around the ups and downs in the personal and professional life of a wrestler, found the audience everywhere, from single screens to multiplexes. As was expected, the film took over the box-office and grossed more than Rs. 300.45 crore at the domestic box office, becoming the highest grosser of the year. As far as worldwide collection of the film is concerned, ‘Sultan’ made Rs. 584 crores all over.


    TRIVIA: Anushka Sharma, who debuted opposite Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and then shared screen space with Aamir Khan in ‘PK, was seen with Salman Khan for the very first time. With ‘Sultan’, she has become one of those very few actresses who have worked with all three popular Khans of Bollywood.
