Movies That Grossed Over 100 Crores in 2016

The Indian box-office witnessed some surprise hits and some shocking flops in the year 2016. Of all the films which entered theaters to try their luck, only a few could manage to hold well and earn some profit for all the parties involved. There were several factors which led even big-budget movies featuring known face tumble down at the ticket window, the most prominent of them being the demonetization move by the Indian government which kept the public away from theaters for more than half a month until the Aamir Khan starrer 'Dangal' arrived in cinemas and garnered moolah from all the corners. Here is the list of Indian movies that grossed over 100 crores in 2016!

    10DANGAL (RS. 717.74 CRORE)

Aamir Khan starrer ‘Dangal’, a biopic based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat who trained his daughters, Geeta and Babita, to become wrestling champions, did the unthinkable at the box-office and achieved a feat which no other film in the entire history of Indian cinema could do. Also starring Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra in pivotal roles, the film fared extremely well at the ticket window and earned Rs. 372.63 crores in 26 days. Despite ‘OK Jaanu’ and ‘xXx: Return Of Xander Cage’ running parallel in theaters, the movie held strongly at the box-office.

‘Dangal’ emerged not only as the highest grosser of 2016, but also highest grosser of all time, breaking the record of ‘PK’ which also starred Aamir Khan as the leading man. With such impressive numbers, the Nitesh Tiwari directorial has now set a new benchmark for other films. It will be interesting to see if the biggies which are lined up for their release in 2017 will be able to smash the string of records ‘Dangal’ has set.

Apart from India, the movie did fabulous business in the overseas markets too. In 26 days, it pulled in over Rs. 200.00 crores from the international circuits. If the full box-office earnings of the film are taken into account, ‘Dangal’ now stands with a mind-boggling collection of over Rs. 721.14 crores gross at the worldwide box-office. Since the film is still running in a number of cinema halls across the world, its winning streak is expected to continue and the film seems poised to make some more money before winding up its run. The film is still Rs 27.27 crore away from reaching the Rs 400 crore mark, but it seems it may fall a few crores short to achieve the feat.

TRIVIA: The film was shot in reverse with the climax first where Aamir Khan plays an older character and the start was shot last where he plays younger character.
