Starring the very gorgeous actress Kajol in a double role of identical twin sisters, along with Sanjay Dutt and Ashutosh Rana in pivotal roles, ‘Dushman’ is one of the best psychological thrillers ever made in India. The story of twin sisters Sonia and Naina, one of whom is murdered at an unthinkable event, touched the emotional chord of the audience all over. People poured in in cinema halls and made the film, which was a remake of Hollywood film ‘Eye for an Eye’ an instant hit.

Directed by Tanuja Chandra and bankrolled by the father-daughter duo Mukesh Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt, the movie clicked with the audience simply because of its astonishingly taut screenplay and meticulous performances put on display by all the three protagonists. Some songs like ‘Chitthi Na Koi Sandes’, ‘Aawaz Do Hamko’ and ‘Pyar Ko Ho Jane Do’ from the film are hummed even today. Composed by Uttam Singh, the film had lyrics by the prolific lyricist Anand Bakshi.

Upon its release in 1998, the film received favorable reviews by critics, which translated into great footfalls in cinema halls, making ‘Dushman’ one of the most profitable ventures of the year. Kajol took home the Best Actress Award for her convincing performance in the film. Ashutosh Rana, who debuted in the industry with this film, won his first Filmfare Best Villain Award.

TRIVIA: Before Sanjay Dutt, the role of Major Suraj Singh Rathod went to Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, but both turned it down.
