Featuring two debutants – Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel – as its protagonists, ‘Kaho Na… Pyaar Hai’ hit screens on 14 January 2000 and, toppling all existing box-office records of that time, became one of the most successful movies of all time. When daddy dear Rakesh Roshan released his directorial, starring his son, even he had not thought that the film would soar so high at the ticket-window. In the entire history of Indian cinema no other movie featuring debutants had performed so stunningly well. Blessed with swoon-worthy looks and ridiculously hot body, Hrithik Roshan came like a hurricane and shook the throne of three biggest superstars of Indian cinema – Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Before making his acting debut and attaining unconquerable superstardom with his first film only, Junior Roshan had worked as an assistant director in his father’s films like ‘Koyla’ and ‘Karan Arjun’. He had even been seen in blink-and-you-miss-it appearances in some films as a child artiste.
The romantic thriller featured Hrithik in a double role as characters Rohit and Raj. While the first character of Rohit charmed the audience with his innocence and talking eyes, goofiness of Raj also found takers galore. By playing double characters, not just Hrithik took a huge risk in the very first outing of his career, his father, Rakesh Roshan, also gambled big time. Before KNPY, Rakesh had made ‘Kishan Kanhaiya’ (1990), which revolved around the story of twin brothers, but here, Rohit and Raj were not brothers. Justifying their precise look-alikeness to the logical audience could have been a mammoth task for an average director, but the maverick filmmaker Rakesh, who had also directed the superhit reincarnation drama ‘Karan Arjun’ (1995), portrayed two completely different characters with so much ease and conviction that the audience did not question as to why Rohit and Raj looked same if they were not brothers. The film did not only rule at the box-office, but it also swept most of the major films awards clocking a record 102 awards, the most by any Bollywood film ever.
TRIVIA: After the astounding success of ‘Kaho Na… Pyaar Hai’, Hrithik got over 30,000 marriage proposals from girls all over the world.
